Temp fix for UML290 modems that disconnect often.

1) Install latest Verizon Wireless Access Manager
a) Download from vzam.net (At time of writing the version was 7.6.3.1)
b) Cleanly uninstall VZAM AND UML290 DRIVERS from the control panel
c) Restart computer
d) Run vzam installer
e) Install latest firmware updates after loading (Coverage Map/Wifi Hotspots)
2) Change connection options to only connect
a) Start vzam and before connecting to the internet, press CTRL-D
b) It will ask for a password. Type diagvzw
c) Click the settings button
d) On the right side, under the Preferred Operating Mode heading, select from global to HDR only (EVDO)*
e) Click okay. It will configure a few things and then when you are back to the vzam homepage, click connect and try it out!

*Note: What this option does is it tells the modem/"internet card" to only connect to EVDO(3g). If you are in and area with 4g you will not be able to connect to in unless you change it back to LTE. In the future, when the issue is resolved from Verizon then you can go back and repeat step 2 and switch it back to Global to allow it to autoswitch to the best network

Wolfenstein & RTCW

So in my 4th grade ADHD mood I was in today, waiting for Wolfenstein to come out on August 4, I decided to install Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Awesome game but I had some issues getting it to work on my Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit system. I followed the install guide here and walla! I got it to work. Cranked up the graphics and it barely even got my system warmed up!

Postscript, My system is as follows:

Mobo: MSI K9A2 Platinum
CPU: AMD Phenom x4 9850
Ram: 4gb ddr2 1066
GPU: Ati Radeon 4870
